Hostelry Institute
The Ontario Hostelry Institute was established in 1977 by hospitality industry leaders concerned over the scarcity of well-trained and educated hospitality professionals. With initial funding from the Ontario Ministry of Colleges and Universities, the Institute embarked on its first major project a successful fundraising campaign which results in a new campus for the Centre for Hospitality and Tourism at George Brown College. The Institute also played a role in the establishment or expansion of hospitality schools at Niagara College, Canadore College, Georgian College and other colleges in Ontario. Today the Institute undertakes various projects whose primary objectives are to serve as catalysts in raising standards of post-secondary hospitality programs; to serve as an advocate for the industry in matters relating to post-secondary education and training including apprenticeship; and to promote and recognize professional excellence in Canadas food service-hospitality industry. Among on-going programs of the Institute are the prestigious Student Awards and Professional Development Awards. The generous support by the foodservice and hospitality industry of the Institute and its annual fund-raising initiative, the Gold Awards Dinner, have resulted in the continued growth in value and the number of awards. Outstanding members of the hospitality-food service industry and student and professional development award recipients are recognized at the Gold Awards Dinner. The Institute manages the Canadian Hospitality Foundation, Canadas largest industry-driven source of foodservice-hospitality scholarships, and has been doing so since October 1993.
